For the purpose of keeping this concise, we will start this timeline in the eighties. That doesn't mean nothing important happened before the eighties. Technically the first computer was made back in the 40s with the ENIAC. From there, computers had kept taking slow steps until a jump in the eighties where they became more accessible.
1980 - The VIC-20 became the first computer to sell more than a million units and demonstrated how computers were on their way to becoming a more normal piece of technology.
1984 - The Macintosh is released by apple and is one of the first computers to have a mouse. The mouse would later become very successful.
1985 - Nintendo releases the NES (Nintendo entertainment system) in the US. This was when Super Mario Bros. was created and turned into one of the most iconic games in history. This wasn't a computer but contributed to technology becoming part of the home.
1996 - Web users reach 36 million users. That is the most of any user community.
1999 - WIFI becomes something that is easy access in the home and is perfect for home living. Also not computers but a major part of computers and mobile devices.
2000 - the first camera is placed on a phone. At this point it isn't computers, just technology centered around computers.
2008 - the MacBook Air is build and public marking the beginning of a new era of a new laptops.
In conclusion, the eighties were a time when technology became more normal in the average house. the 2000s were when technology truly soared and and world started to rely on it to function.
I loved this post because it was concise yet very informative of the subject! While watching the documentaries of the week I also found the discussion of Apple and early computers starting to take off very interesting and had not previously realized how quick the timeline advanced. As you stated computers had been around for a long time but in the 80s the technology needed for personal computers really took off and made the market highly accessible. As seen in your timeline this caused an explosion of consumers in a new market never seen before by the general public. Computers brought consumerism to a whole new level in the 80s and served as a total game changer for all future technology to come.
ReplyDeleteI liked that this post was concise but also gave information about technology and how different it was just 30 or so years ago. To add onto your blog, the Commodore 64 was the first portable computer with color display. While Cassette tapes were still used as data storage, the portable computer proved to be a huge technological advancement during this time.

I loved the timeline that you made because it made it really easy to see the development of computers and how they began to make their ways into people's homes. I find it interesting that WiFi had existed as early as 1999 and that there were already 36 million users by 1996. If we're looking at video games consoles alone, some other iconic devices that were released during the time period were the Game Boy in 1989, the SNES in 1990, and the play station in 1994. In addition I'm sure many of us owned a D.S. Lite when we were kids, but interestingly enough, by the time we were old enough to use one, the D.S. was probably already several years old. It came out in 2006! I guess this is just a testament to how well video game consoles age.
ReplyDeleteThis website is super cool by the way.
