Brezhnev and Nixon at the White House |
Another time we see Nixon's and Brezhnev's friendship is during the Watergate Scandal Investigations. The USSR noticed a change in Nixon. Anatoly Dobrynin, the Soviet Ambassador, remarked that "One began to sense his growing bewilderment, lack of confidence and withdrawal from other matters." As a result, Brezhnev had Dobrynin deliver a secret message to Nixon. On Brezhnev's behalf, Dobrynin told Nixon "No doubt, there are some people - and not only in the U.S. - who anticipate that Richard Nixon won't be able to take it and will crack under the pressure. But, we are pleased to note, you have no intention of giving them that satisfaction." In Brezhnev's letter, it contained a foreword that said: "simple human words to lift his spirit." Brezhnev wrote to Nixon that he will not "crack under the pressure." In response to Brezhnev's letter, Nixon wanted to thank Brezhnev for his encouragement.
There are not many examples of the friendship between Nixon and Brezhnev since meetings were not recorded. However, both had always intended to create a "long-lasting relationship" between the USSR and America.

I think the relationship between these two men was certainly interesting. It's important to remember that while Nixon did some shady stuff, he was ultimately responsible for thaw in the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union. I think this blog is a good reminder of the achievements Nixon made as POTUS.
ReplyDeleteI like how your blog post discusses an aspect of history that is typically overlooked! Nixon's and Brezhnev's friendship is very intriguing. While researching this further, I found that both of them would often meet one-on-one with Viktor Sukhodrev, their translator. It's interesting to see how such a relationship was formed when neither of them spoke each other's language and a translator needed to moderate the conversation. Their conversations were recorded on Nixon's taping system, so some of them are available for the public to hear.
