The Chicago Bulls in the '90s

The Chicago Bulls were arguably one of the best franchises in sports history, sporting legendary names like Michael Jordan and Scotty Pippen, and winning six championships between 1991 and 1998. Despite the team’s dominance over the NBA, they had humble beginnings. The first starting five would lay the groundwork for the foundation of the team. They were lead by arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan. At the time of their first championship, he was the only all-star on the team. The team was able to have the franchise high winning season and beat the Lakers in the finals. What distinguished the Chicago Bulls of the ‘90s wasn’t their capability of winning some games and a championship, but their continuous series of winning and improvement. The following year, they continued to beat their prior records, setting another franchise record. They would continue to prevail in the NBA finals, winning another championship in 1992. At this point, the nation was starting to see that the legacy of the team would grow, and viewers of the team would rise. Once again in 1993, the Bulls beat the Phoenix suns to get their third consecutive championship. However, the team’s progress would halt as their lead player would choose to suddenly retire. After their championship, Michael Jordan’s father was murdered, and he announced that he wouldn’t be returning to the Bulls, and instead play minor league baseball for the Chicago White Sox.

For the two years following Jordan’s retirement, the Bulls struggled to regain their dominance over the league. Although players like Scotty Pippen were leading the new roster, they weren’t able to get close to the finals. Hope was restored two years later when Michael Jordan returned. That season, they had the highest win-loss record, until the 2016 Golden State Warriors. The dynasty was back, and Michael Jordan won the season MVP, Finals MVP, and the All-Star Game MVP. The team would continue to win the next three seasons, having their second three-peat. After their 1998 season, the team started to deteriorate, but it was known that they were the best team to play in NBA history. The spread of Michael Jordan made him and the Bulls a household name and would birth a 1.9 billion-dollar company in Jordan Brand. If you are interested in learning more about the ‘90s Bulls and Jordan, there is going to be an ESPN docu-series airing on April 19th covering the dynasty.
