War Refugee Board

During late 1943 into the early months of 1944, the mass murders of Jewish people during the holocaust began to become publicized internationally. As a result the United States' leadership were put under pressure to establish a government agency who would attempt to help these victims in any way they could. With public support, Roosevelt signed order 9417 in January of 1944, which established the United States War Refugee Board. The goals of this board were to establish policies which could help alleviate victims. Their policies would be up kept by Diplomats throughout the world.
One of the board's largest successes was the establishment of a refugee camp for victims of the holocaust who managed to flee Europe. It also housed many people liberated in Italy by the United State's during their military campaign there. This was a non-permanent facility, each refugee had to sign a document which stated they would return to Europe after the war concluded. Regardless this offered a safe residence for people affected by absurd violence and death during the horrific war.
The War Refugee Board also sponsored the Swedish business man, Raoul Wallenberg. With the important aid of the WFB he was able to travel to Budapest, a city where over 440,000 Jews had been taken to Germany. He helped rescue many of the 200,000 remaining Jews by handing out Swedish protective papers. It is estimated by the end of the war he may have helped saved over 70,000 of these people.
