Bombers were slower and heavier due to the weapons they carried, but they could inflict substantial damage on a region. The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a US bomber aircraft in WWII. These planes dropped over 640,000 tons of bombs during the war. These aircraft were responsible for daytime bombings during the march to Berlin and often flew in set formations. They were used both in the US army and in Britain's Royal Air Force. B-17 bombers also played a role in the Pacific Theater against Japan. However, this aircraft was more successful in Europe, so they were largely withdrawn from the Pacific and were replaced with other bombers.
Fighter jets were fast and had a long-range. These were engaged in air combat and shot down enemy planes when possible. The North American P-51 Mustang was one of the more well-known fighter jets. It had a top speed of 437 miles per hour and a maximum range of 750 miles. This aircraft only has one seat and one engine, making them incredibly agile and effective. They were equipped with six machine guns, four on the wings and two on the nose. Although mostly used in low altitude operations, P-51 Mustangs were produced in large quantities and were important fighter jets in the war effort.
One type of transport plane used in the US war effort was the Beechcraft Model 18. Over 9,000 were built and 4,500 were used in the military during the war. This plane carried mail, people, trainers, and other supplies necessary for the US war effort. Transport planes were used to carry needed items and resources to the soldiers.
Aircraft was a vital aspect of the war effort, and the US was leading the production of these vessels. Due to the increase in technology and manufacturing, WWII was characterized by machine warfare, and airplanes made up a significant part of this. Many different types of airplanes existed and were used in the war. The US' industrial might and aircraft production was a key aspect of succeeding in the war effort.
