Why We Fight

By 1941 Frank Capra was an acclaimed American filmmaker, having created popular Hollywood hits such as You Can't Take It With You (1938) and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1931). His success in the film industry led him to become a key figure in the American propaganda movement. Capra was commissioned to produce a series of documentaries directed towards the American people called Why We Fight, clarifying the global conflict and stressing the importance of American participation in World War II.

The complete documentary had seven different episodes that were released between 1942 and 1945, as follows:

1. Prelude To War (1942)
2. The Nazis Strike (1943)
3. Divide and Conquer (1943)
4. The Battle of Britain (1943)
5. The Battle of Russia (1943)
6. The Battle of China (1944)
7. War Comes to America (1945)

Each episode focused on a different topic, such as the rise of Nazism, the fall of France, the invasion of Poland and Russia, and Japanese aggression in China. The documentary's audience was huge: 54 million Americans had seen it by the time the war ended. It was very influential in convincing the American people to support the war effort. The first episode, Prelude to War, won an Academy Award for Best Documentary, and Capra was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his impact on the war effort.
