By the time Crazy Horse was in his mid-teens he was already a full-fledged warrior. In 1866, the gold was discovered on the Indian territories, the struggle for the land started. General William Tecumseh Sherman built a number of forts in Sioux territory. In the response Crazy Horse acted as a decoy to lead the 80 white soldiers to their death in an ambush. The soldiers' bodies were hacked up to send a message to Sherman. In 1867 Crazy Horse attacked a small fort. Even though, white people wanted to sign the treaty, according to which the white were not allowed to enter the Indian territory, he declined that offer, because he preferred to conduct raids on enemy tribes.
As the railroads expanded west, tensions rose between Native Americans and soldiers. In 1872, Crazy Horse conducted a raid with Sitting Bull against 400 soldiers. His horse was shot out beneath him after he made a reckless dash ahead to meet the U.S. Army. In 1873 he faced General George Armstrong Custer, trying to steal the horses of his army. However, he failed and had to retreat. Another his merit was the participation in the Battle of Rosebud when he pushed back, General George Crook. One of his tremendous battles was battles was the Battle of the Little Big Horn, also known as Custer’s Last Stand. Crazy Horse led 1000 warriors and the general’s army was defeated. After that battle the U.S government sent scouts to round up any Northern Plains tribes who resisted. This forced many Indian Nations to move across the country, always followed by soldiers, until starvation and exposure forced them to surrender. Trying to protect his people and land, he was taken to jail after the breakdown in negotiation. He was wounded during a struggle for his life, after that he died. All in all Crazy Horse was a brave warrior who put the needs of his people above his own.

ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to see that while most Indians accepted their fate and signed treaties some such as Crazy Horse stood back and fought against the Americans. What makes him stand out is his leadership abilities and the fact that he was able to repel the Americans at Custer's Last Stand. It would appear that Crazy Horse was exposed to fighting at a young age which most likely contributed to him being the leader he was. Overall, your article does an excellent job of capturing what type of person Crazy Horse was.
